Invest in Your Talents

It’s been said that 10,000 hours of deliberate practice is needed to become an expert at a skill. If I want my talents to increase, I need to invest in them. Whatever I invest in will grow.

I’ve always loved the parable of the talents that can be found in Matthew 25:14-30 and Luke 19:12-27. While I know that talents were former weights of money during those times, I think it rings true to talents or skills in this day and age. Some people look at others and get jealous of the talents they have and get distracted from developing their own talents. They’re unaware of the time invested during the hidden seasons in those people’s lives, ignorant that more is required of them, and too focused on their own lack. Others think God is holding out on them, that God is unjust in what He gives, or possibly unworthy of the praise He receives from others’ work. As I’ve gotten to know God’s heart more, I’ve found that the only injustice He could ever be accused of is that He is willing to share His talents and glory with us who are so undeserving. He not only gives us talents out of His abundance, but as we are faithful to steward whatever He has blessed us with, those talents and our platform grows, and He’s willing to share His glory with us out of the abundance of His heart.

I know some talents might not be as well known. I know some talents might not be as praised in this world, but possibly that’s just because nobody has ever taken the time to develop them yet. God is such a good God. He’s gifted us all with talents. Don’t waste time looking at others thinking they’ve been given more than you have. Ask God what talents He’s given you and take the time to invest in them. When you’re faithful in whatever measure He’s given you, no matter how small, He will increase your authority and platform and share His praise with you because that’s just the kind of Master He is.

I challenge you, whatever talents you’ve been given, don’t hide them. Steward them and invest in them knowing a gracious God entrusted you with them to be put to use and multiply.
